An Ecumenical Service bringing together those affected by all forms of cancer.

Who We Are & What We Do

The initiative came from retired thoracic surgeon Professor Ray Donnelly, MBE FRCS,

Founder and President of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.  He was supported by

Bro Ken Vance SJ  and other cancer charities including  Marie Curie Cancer Care,

The Lily Centre, Alder Hey, The Linda McCartney Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support,

Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology NHS Trust, The North West Cancer Research Fund,

Sunflowers and Woodlands Hospice.

The ecumenical service was first held in 1999 and since then services have been held

annually in Liverpool, in either the Anglican or Roman Catholic Cathedral.

Representatives of the Salvation Army and other free churches on Merseyside

have taken part in all the services.

The service has proved to be very popular and is attended by many of the civic dignitaries.

In 2009 Pause for Hope began a partnership with BBC Radio Merseyside, resulting in even

greater community involvement, further increased in 2010 by a new partnership with the

Liverpool Echo.

Annual services are now held in various locations including Chester, Lampeter and

Glasgow, with other services being held in different parts of the UK.
